Our Approach to Teaching in Residency:

AIM Seattle is an adaptive arts and movement nonprofit serving Neurodivergent and Disabled youth ages 5–24. Our work centers Disability Justice and the principle of “nothing about us, without us,” with many staff, board members, and teaching artists coming from the communities we serve.

Our core programs are weekly adaptive arts and movement classes, arts camps, and young adults' art program. In every setting, our philosophy is that youth are not simply accommodated; they are centered and celebrated. We design classes where young people experience belonging, positive identity development, and peer connection.

Our teaching approach is neurodiversity-affirming, collaborative, and youth-led. We use movement, music, theater, and visual arts as tools for self-expression, emotional regulation, and exploration of self, while inviting youth voice in song choice, activities, and program design.

At AIM, we believe that disability is a natural and valuable part of human diversity, and that arts and movement education should be designed with accessibility, flexibility, and dignity at their core. Rather than asking youth to conform to rigid behavioral expectations or traditional arts instruction models, we adapt our classes to support a wide range of communication styles, sensory needs, movement patterns, and ways of engaging. Participants are encouraged to show up as their authentic selves, whether that means taking breaks when needed, communicating nonverbally, engaging from the sidelines before joining in, or participating in ways that look different from their peers. We understand regulation, trust, and relationship-building as foundational to learning and creativity.

In an in-school residency setting, AIM collaborates closely with special education teachers, visual and performing arts teachers, and other school staff to create programming that is responsive to the specific needs and strengths of each classroom community. Residencies are designed with flexibility in mind and may include movement, music, theater, storytelling, sensory exploration, collaborative art-making, or creative social-emotional learning activities. Lessons are scaffolded to support a wide range of access needs, using visual supports, predictable routines, multimodal instruction, and opportunities for choice-making and self-direction. Our teaching artists prioritize relationship-building and co-regulation strategies while maintaining high artistic expectations and meaningful opportunities for creative expression.

We also recognize that social isolation and exclusion remain significant barriers for many Disabled and Neurodivergent youth and their families. AIM’s programs are designed to foster authentic peer relationships and community connection across differences. Through collaborative art-making, shared routines, performances, leadership opportunities, and moments of play and creativity, participants experience the arts as a space where they belong. Families and educators often describe AIM programs as environments where young people feel fully accepted without needing to mask, suppress behaviors, or earn inclusion.
